How to Replace a Piano's Hammer Shanks

    • 1). Lift the top cover of the piano so you have access to the hammers. These are the shafts of wood that raise up when a key is depressed.

    • 2). Use your screwdriver to loosen the screw at the base of the hammer and remove it.

    • 3). Lift the hammer out of the piano. The wool pad is connected to the hammer via a wooden hinge called the shank.

    • 4). Grip the shank at its base with the pliers, and pry the shank off the end of the hammer.

    • 5). Insert the end of the hammer into the hole of a new shank, and twist the hammer in until it is taught and secure.

    • 6). Replace the hammer in the piano, making sure the wool pad connected to the shank is facing up.

    • 7). Replace the screw in the hammer.
