How to Deduct Real Estate Tax From Previous Years
- 1). Fill out Form 1040X (See References) and complete a different form for each year you're amending your return. It may also be helpful to read the instructions for Form 1040X (See References).
- 2). Complete Schedule A. Besides filling out Form 1040X, you need to itemize your deductions on Schedule A, including the real estate tax you paid but didn't claim the first time. See Resources for the schedule and instructions.
- 3). Mail Form 1040X and Schedule A to the IRS. The mailing address depends on where you live. You can find the list on page 5 of the instructions for Form 1040X. The IRS takes eight to 12 weeks to process a tax amendment request from the day it receives it. If you're mailing more than one 1040X for different tax years, send them in separate envelopes.
