How to Troubleshoot Onan Generator Surges
- 1). Check the fuel and oil levels in the generator, if it is surging or if you are seeing black smoke come from the unit. Open the fuel tank and add fuel if you are unable to see any by looking inside. Check and clean the fuel strainer. Remove the oil dipstick and add oil if the oil mark is below the "Fill" line.
- 2). Check the spark plug and the spark plug cable on the side of the engine compartment as a surging problem could be initiated by the ignition system. Examine the spark plug cable to ensure that the spark plug is properly inserted and that the cable is not damaged. If the cable is broken, frayed or worn, you will need a professional to replace the cable.
- 3). Remove the spark plug from the engine by pulling it straight out of the cable, if the cable itself is not the issue. Examine the spark plug to see if there is any visible damage or dirt on it. If it is dirty, use a clean cloth to wipe down the plug until it is clean. Reinsert the plug. If the problem continues, you might have a faulty plug that will need to be replaced.
- 4). Move the generator to a more level location, if you are continuing to have problems. If the generator is off balance or on an uneven surface, the fuel and oil my not flow normally into the engine. Use a level if necessary to ensure that the area is flat. If you continue to have issues after this, you will need to contact customer service or a mechanic.
