How to Obtain a Tax ID
- 1). Launch your computer's Internet browser and go to "irs.gov." Click the "Apply for An Employer Identification Number Online" link, located on the left side of the page beneath the Online Services header.
- 2). Review the hours of availability. The application is online Monday-Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Eastern time. Click the "Apply Online Now" link near the bottom of the page.
- 3). Review the "EIN Important Information Before You Begin" displayed on the page. Click the "Begin Application" button.
- 4). Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the application. Answer each question accurately to identify your business' legal structure, authenticate business ownership, provide the business address and details. Click "Continue" after each completed section. You will receive your EIN confirmation upon successful completion and business verification.
- 1). Call the IRS at 800-829-4933 to apply for a tax ID number over the phone. Business hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and your EIN will be given to you immediately.
- 2). Fax a completed Form SS-4 to your state's designated fax number. A printable SS-4 and list of fax numbers are available on the "irs.gov" website. An EIN will be faxed back to you within four business days.
- 3). Mail a completed SS-4 application to the IRS, Attn. EIN Operation, Cincinnati, OH 45999. Your EIN will be issued by mail within four weeks.
