How to Install a Faux Stainless Steel Backsplash for About $50
- 1
Order a couple packages of metal tiles on-line. They come in several different colors and styles. To determine how many you'll need, measure the space you want to tile -- each tile is 4 by 4 inches. The back splashes I installed above my sink and range took a total of 80 tiles. The tiles are thin brushed aluminum with a sheet of double-sided adhesive tabs. - 2
Once your tiles arrive, determine how you want to arrange them -- in a straight grid or diamond grid, with the grain of the brushed aluminum going all one way, or alternating. Lay them out on the counter to determine what looks best. If you go with a diamond pattern, you can purchase pre-cut triangle-shaped tiles for neat edges. - 3
Apply a double-sided tab (comes with the tiles) to each corner of a tile. Line up your tile with counter or whichever edge you'd like to start with. It is a neater look if you start from the bottom row and go up. You may also want to measure the width of your space and start with the middle of the first tile lined up in the exact center. Press your tile down firmly on all 4 corners. - 4
Continue along, building your pattern, butting the edges of the tiles as close together as possible. - 5
When you get to a place where you need to make a cut to fit around molding or cabinets, measure and mark the tile with a marker. They trim easily with scissors. Place tabs around cut and apply as usual. - 6
Enjoy your new look -- no messy clean-up or heavy lifting required.
