How to Make Original Costumes
- 1). Design your costume. Look at other costumes from the same era or genre. Look at all the individual pieces of a costume to see what gives it flair and flavor, such as types of jewelry, fabric lining, or draped bits of fabric. Incorporate those pieces into your own design.
- 2). Sketch out your costume. If you can't sketch, make a list of the things you'll need. Belts, gloves, boots, toga or tunic or cloak -- whatever elements you've put together to make your costume, write them down, along with what material and color they should be. Some things you'll be able to buy, while some you may need to make.
- 3). Gather up the costume pieces you do have. Even if they are only a belt and boots, seeing them together will help you fill in what you're missing. Make note of what colors to shop for and any accessories you need.
- 4). Keep an eye on functionality. If you don't have to do anything but stand on stage, you can make your costume as complicated as you want. If you have to run or move around a lot, you'll need to keep it fairly simple.
- 5). Make sure you'll be comfortable. Try to base your costume around a leotard or soft pants and a shirt, and add on around those.
- 6). Try it on beforehand. Fix any problems you may have found, like loose threads or uncomfortable costume bits. If you'll be wearing make-up, take some time to put that on, too.
