Pool Deck Maintenance

    Concrete Pool Decks

    • According to All-Things-Concrete, concrete pool decks do not need much maintenance, but keeping a coat of sealer on them is important. Sealer keeps anything from penetrating the concrete surface, so it prevents stains and keeps the surface from getting worn down by weather or pool chemicals. Ideally, a sealer should be applied every three to four years. Use acrylic sealer on a clean, dry deck.

    Wooden Decks

    • Wooden pool decks need annual care and attention. Pool water and weather can cause the deck to deteriorate. Ideas For Deck Designs says the expansion and contraction of wood caused by moisture can make boards split or warp and fasteners pop. To prevent rotting, you must routinely sweep puddles, leaves and dirt off the deck. Every year, inspect the pool deck for insects and rotting boards and soft spots. Replace damaged boards with new ones.

When cleaning a wooden deck, use a cleaner specifically designed for decks. Spray off the cleaner with a pressure washer to remove the deepest dirt and grime that might have wedged itself in the wood. Do not pressure wash heavily; a light spray will work fine. Every year, use a brightener followed by a new stain or finish to further protect the wood from weather and water.

    Consulting a Professional

    • If a pool deck has been neglected, it may be best to consult a professional. Completely rotten decks will have to be replaced. Professionals will have access to high-quality cleaners that individuals cannot obtain, and pros will use commercial airless sprayers and professional-grade pressure washers for a consistent application. Always have the contractor inspect your pool deck thoroughly before giving a quote on the price.
