PhD Scholarships & Fellowships
- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowship Program assists students in completing their dissertations and pursuing their research after finishing their PhD degrees. The dissertation completion program is open to students enrolled in PhD programs in the humanities or social sciences. They must have completed all degree requirements except for the dissertation. The award is $25,000 plus fees and research costs up to $8,000. A fellowship for recent PhD recipients awards a $35,000 stipend to individuals who have finished their doctorate no more than two years prior to applying for the fellowship.
- The Udall Foundation's Environmental Public Policy & Conflict Resolution Ph.D. Fellowship is awarded annually to two doctoral candidates whose research involves U.S. environmental policy or environmental conflict resolution. Candidates must be in their final year of dissertation research. The fellowship is in the amount of $24,000, and applicants must be U.S. citizens who have finished all other requirements for the doctorate, including preliminary exams. Funds are for offsetting living expenses; recipients are selected based on their commitment to environmental policy, academic achievement, grades and recommendations.
- The Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship Program awards up to 15 grants of $20,000 each to students enrolled in PhD or DBA programs. The grants support dissertation research in the area of entrepreneurship. The program was founded in 2003 and has awarded 123 fellowships. Interested students submit a proposal summarizing the research project they plan to pursue, along with a recommendation letter. Students must be enrolled in U.S. institutions in order to be eligible for a fellowship.
- The Economic Club of Washington, in conjunction with the the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area (CUWMA), awards three $10,000 fellowships annually. The Vernon E. Jordan Fellowship is given to two doctoral-level students attending consortium institutions; the award is to support independent research in areas that support the Club. The Phillip M. Dearborn Fellowship is awarded to a doctoral student pursuing research dealing with issues relevant to the Greater Washington, D.C. area. Research areas can include economics, social welfare and community development. Consortium schools include Georgetown University, Howard University and the University of Maryland.
