Rose Tips

Growing roses is not particularly difficult as far as landscaping plants go. Choose rose bushes that are right for your landscaping and the space that you have. After choosing the type of rose you want, take care of it properly by giving it proper support, pruning when necessary and giving it fertilizer to aid in the growing process. - Some varieties of roses need support to grow properly. A few of the types of roses that need support include Blaze, Golden Showers, Fourth of July and Joseph's Coat. All these are either ramblers or climbing roses and will not do well without some type of support in the form of a fence or trellis. Make sure the support you give the roses is strong and will not fall over under the weight of mature rose bushes. If necessary, tie the roses to the trellis using hook and loop ties, which you can remove and rearrange whenever needed.
- Prune your rose bushes to get bigger and better flowers. You may find that unpruned rose bushes get scraggly looking. That is because the nutrients that the roots absorb is spread out through so many different branches. Cutting back some of the weaker canes will give the bush flowers that are larger and nicer looking. When pruning, start by cutting all the canes that look damaged or diseased. You can also prune to give the rose bush a definite shape and make your landscaping look attractive and interesting. Prune only after the roses are done blooming. Good times to prune are either in fall or late winter and early spring. Use gloves when pruning roses to protect your hands from scratches.
- Being planted in the soil does not provide enough nutrients for the roots to absorb everything the plant needs. Adding some nutrients occasionally may be necessary. You should not have to fertilize roses more than once a year, usually in the spring when new growth is occurring. Choose from either organic fertilizers, which help feed the soil to make your roses look better, or chemical fertilizers which feed the rose plants themselves. Look for special rose fertilizers at a garden shop. To give the roses a little treat throughout the year, put used coffee grounds around the base of the plant. Roses soak up the acid from the coffee grounds.
