30 Days with iPhone, Day 60: 60 Days with iPhone
I’ve been living with the iPhone for over 60 days now and my life is no better and no worse. The phone continues to be cool, a source of great eye candy, and something people still ask if they can hold, play with, etc., but it hasn’t been a revolution in my life. I still feel like the device was more expensive than I would have liked.
So does that mean I’m more negative about the iPhone than I was 30 days ago?
No. In the past, I’ve come to despise almost every cell phone I’ve had pretty quickly. I’ve hated their interfaces, their shapes, their options or lack thereof. None of that has happened with the iPhone. It’s mostly just faded into the background of my life, which is what I think I want a phone to do.
After 60 days, though, there are a few areas that have stood out in particular and might be of interest.
Screen Quality
At its release, the iPhone’s screen was touted as nearly unscratchable. Scratch that notion. I’ve got dings and divots on my screen, with no idea where they came from. I had a case, I kept the thing in my pocket, away from keys. Anyway, it came a little too late, but now I’m using the Crystal Film screen protectors from Power Mobility, which offer great protection and better touch control.
Dangerous Email
I find myself checking my email in traffic now that I have the iPhone. A really bad habit that I need to get out of.
Unused iPod
I’ve barely ever used the phone as an iPod. Usually, it leaves the house with me as a phone and the headphones don’t come with me.
I think not using the iPod functions has a lot to do with the headphone jack. If it was standard and could plug into the car stereo adapter I already use, I’d probably use it a lot more. As it is, I’m not real inclined to buy a headphone jack adapter to hook the iPhone into my car right now.
Hacks and New Programs
I’ve spent a little time hacking the iPhone and adding third-party software to it, but have mostly given up on that right now. I’ve used iFunstastic to add custom ringtones and have tried to install some games (especially the NES emulator. That looks like tons of fun). The problem? Every time Apple releases a new software update, I’ve had to delete the full contents of my iPhone and restore them in order to install the update. Having custom ringtones or new apps isn’t really worth the 45-minute restore and update process right now. I hope that the conflict between third-party developers and Apple’s software updates gets resolved soon, though, because I would like some more customization options.
