How to Access a C Drive From a Boot Disk
- 1). Browse to the NTFS4DOS download page using the link in the "Resources" section of this article. NTFS4DOS is a utility which creates a boot floppy that can read NTFS-formatted hard drives. It is free for personal use. Insert a blank floppy disk into your computer and launch the application after it is installed.
- 2). Select the letter of your floppy drive (usually A:) and hit the "Format" button.
- 3). Select the "quick format" option and click "Start" to format the floppy disk and clear it of all data. Click "Close" to return to the NTFS4DOS window and click "Next."
- 4). Click "OK" when you see the warning about a bootable disk not being present. Leave all of the check marks as they currently are in the following screen and click "Next." Click "Create Floppy" to create the disk. When the process is complete, the window will close automatically.
- 5). Insert the boot floppy into the computer that you are working on and turn the computer on. The computer will boot from the floppy. If it does not, use the motherboard setup utility by hitting the key specified when the computer is turned on (usually "Delete" or one of the "F" keys) to adjust the computer boot order so that the floppy drive appears first.
- 6). Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select "NTFS4DOS" and hit Enter. The boot process will continue.
- 7). Type "yes" and hit Enter when you are asked to confirm that you are using NTFS4DOS for personal use. You will be brought to the DOS prompt.
- 8). Type "C:" to access the hard drive.
