Motorcycle Helmets are becoming a necessity when it comes to rider gear not only because it they are mandatory in many states, but riders are becoming more and more conscientious about their safety when they're out on the road.  Shopping for this product has become more and more complicated because of the different types available to shoppers and it's important to identify which is going to be more suited for the rider.

Here are some of the different types of motorcycle helmets available today:

DOT Motorcycle Helmets

These type of helmets include all styles of helmet from half to full face and are named DOT because of the standards that they must pass in order to be considered safe for riders.  These type of helmets are made for safety with their thick inner liners and tough outer shells.  Many motorcyclists base their shopping on the fact that their helmet must meet DOT standards for their own preference, or because it is required.  Many biker safety courses require the use of DOT helmets so that has led to an increase in demand for this type.

Full Face Motorcycle Helmets

These helmets encompass the entire head so no surface is left exposed.  Full face helmets have thick shell and inner liner and provide the most protection for the rider.  They are equipped with face masks that open and close, which provides air circulation for the rider.  This type of helmet is available in many different styles and is very popular among the sport bike riders.

Motorcycle Half Helmets

Perhaps one of the most popular types of helmet to those that ride cruisers, the half helmet is a half shell helmet that sits on the riders head and only extends down to about the level of the rider's ears.  There are many variations of the half helmet, and some are smaller than others which may be preferred.  The half helmet is popular because of the freedom that it provides to riders by not having their entire head enclosed in a helmet.

Modular Helmets

This type of motorcycle helmet is very similar to the full face version.  The only difference is that the front portion of the helmet that surrounds the face can be flipped up into an upright position, leaving the face exposed which allows for more circulation and ventilation.

Novelty Helmets

The novelty motorcycle helmet is similar in shape and style to the half helmet.  The difference between the two is that the novelty helmets are made with a much smaller construction because of the fact that there is a very small inner liner.  So these types of helmets often times provide the smallest profile look possible.  The only drawback to these helmets is the fact that they provide very little protection to the rider because there is no inner protective liner.  If a sleek look is what you're looking for though, this is your best option.

Shopping for a motorcycle helmet can be a time consuming task but if you have a good idea of what you're looking for, then your experience will be much more pleasant and less stressful.
