How to Net Fruit Trees

    • 1). Measure the height and wide of your fruit tree. Add on 6 inches to compensate for the tree's eventual growth. Write down the measurements for material. Leave enough space in the netting for any fruit tree maintenance like picking or pruning.

    • 2). Purchase frame material from your local hardware store. Bird netting frames can be made out of metal, timber or lengths of polythene pipe. Buy four long pieces for the height and four for the width of the fruit tree based on your measurements.

    • 3). Place all four posts into the ground. Secure the long pieces with nail glue. If you are building a small frame, construct the frame on the ground and flip it over when all pieces are attached.

    • 4). Stretch the net across the frame. Use a net with a mesh size of 40 mm or smaller. A large mesh size can allow animals to get in and become tangled. Secure the net with rope.

    • 5). Make sure that the netting falls to the ground and is pegged. Animals will try to creep under the netting and get stuck. Monitor your fruit tree to ensure that an animal isn't trapped within the netting.
