From De Smet, a visitor should drive southeast on Highway 14 to Homestead Road, and turn right to get to the homestead's visitor center.

    What's at the Ingalls Homestead

    • The Charles Ingalls homestead features an original 1878 shanty built by the Burvee family, a barn with a hay roof, a reconstruction of the original shanty Charles Ingalls built in 1880, the "Little Prairie School" discussed in the "Little House" books, and a memorial to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

    Visiting the Ingalls Homestead

    • A visit to the Ingalls homestead costs $10, and allows visitors to take part in pioneering activities, such as rope making, corn shelling, and making a corn cob doll. Visitors can also view all the exhibits and climb a lookout tower to see the entire homestead.
