How to Install Brakes on a Yamaha 650
- 1). Remove the bolts attaching the bottom of the brake caliper to the front fork, using a socket wrench fitted with a 12 mm socket. Lift the bottom edge of the caliper away from the fork leg to access the brake pads.
- 2). Pull the old brake pads and the brake pad spring out of the caliper. Clean the caliper's inner pistons with a brake cleaning spray then wipe it dry with a shop towel
- 3). Slip a piece of plastic tubing over the caliper's air bleed valve, positioned just above the brake line, and run the opposite end of the tubing into a small container. Twist the air bleed valve a quarter of a turn counterclockwise with an 8 mm wrench to open the valve. Press the pistons into the caliper with your thumbs until they are seated completely. Twist the air bleed valve clockwise to close the valve, then remove the tubing.
- 4). Place the brake pad spring into the caliper, followed by the new brake pads. Slide the caliper over the brake rotor and reinstall the caliper's bolts, using a 12 mm socket. Tighten the caliper's bolts to 16 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
- 1). Unscrew the adjuster nut from the rear wheel's brake rod, using a 10 mm wrench. Pull out the cotter pin from the tension bar below the brake drum with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Unscrew the tension bar's nut and bolt with a 12 mm wrench and a 12 mm socket.
- 2). Loosen the lock nut from the left side of the rear axle with a 32 mm socket. Loosen the four bolts securing the rear wheel's final drive to the left side of the swingarm with a 14 mm socket.
- 3). Lift the motorcycle off of the ground with a service lift. Place a ratcheting tie-down strap on each handlebar and strap the motorcycle to the lift for support. Unscrew the final drive bolts and the rear axle's lock nut completely with a 14 and a 32 mm socket, respectively. Pull the rear wheel and final drive away from the motorcycle.
- 4). Pull the axle out from the right side of the rear wheel. Pull the cover off of the brake drum and remove both brake shoes and springs. Clean the inner lining of the brake drum with a brake cleaning spray. Wipe dry with a shop towel.
- 5). Install the new brake shoes and springs into the brake drum. Place the cover over the brake drum.
- 6). Reinstall the rear wheel onto the motorcycle, following the reverse order of removal. Loosely tighten the final drive bolts and the rear axle lock nut. Lower the motorcycle to the ground. Tighten the bolts to 50 foot-pounds and the axle nut to 60 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.
