    Removal and Installation

    • 1). Unscrew the bolt that holds the negative terminals of the engine's batteries together and disconnect these cables. Move these terminals far away from the batteries or any other metal surface of the engine bay, since these cables can ground themselves and reignite the electrical connection.

    • 2). Place a drain pan underneath the 6.0L's radiator, ensuring that it is directly below the plug. Twist off the radiator filler cap, allowing the coolant to flow swiftly and consistently into the pan. Turn the drainage plug counter-clockwise until the engine coolant begins to drain. Allow all of the coolant to drain completely into the pan, replacing the drainage plug when you are finished.

    • 3). Label all of the electrical wiring and hoses that connect to the intake and exhaust manifolds. Remove these wires and hoses, setting them aside for later use. Unscrew the bolts that hold the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds to the engine. Lift each of these manifolds away from the engine, setting them aside. Unscrew the bolts and remove the valve cover that attaches to the cylinder head.

    • 4). Unscrew the bolts that hold the cylinder heads to the engine block. Once the bolts have been removed, pull up on the cylinder block to remove it from the engine. Lift the old head gaskets off of the engine block with your hands. If they are stuck to the cylinder heads or engine, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the gaskets away from the parts.

    • 5). Scrape away any excess elemental material that has built-up on the engine block or cylinder heads. You may also want to do the same for the intake manifold and exhaust manifold connections; this will ensure the best possible results for your engine. Wipe away small amounts of debris with a linen cloth and gasket removal solvent.

    • 6). Apply a thin layer of gasket sealant to both sides of the new head gaskets. Check both gaskets for any directions on which sides face up. Lay them so that they fit securely over the bolt studs of the engine block.

    • 7). Position the old cylinder heads on top of the newly-installed head gaskets. Make sure that all of the cylinder ports align perfectly, just as they were before they were removed. Hand-screw each of the cylinder head bolts as tight as you can. Torque each of the bolts with the torque wrench to 140 ft-lbs.

    • 8). Reinstall the valve cover, exhaust manifolds and intake manifold of the 6.0L. Torque the bolts of the exhaust manifolds to 27 ft-lbs and the intake manifold bolts to 34 ft-lbs.

    • 9). Reconnect all of the electrical wiring and hoses that were removed to access the core automotive parts of the engine block. Reconnect the engine batteries' negative terminals to restore power to the engine. Start your 6.0L motor and inspect the engine for any leaks.
