The kalanchoe, a succulent plant, stores water within its thick stems and leaves. A native to the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa, the kalanchoe offers dark green foliage and blooms of golden yellow, salmon pink and dark orange to name a few. The succulent is not frost tolerant, thriving mostly in temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees F. Kalanchoe requires enough water to prevent wilting, however the soil should never be soggy, as root rot is inevitable. The plant is a widely popular house plant in Europe, though not as well adored in the Americas.

The ficus plant is a native to the tropical and sub-tropical regions of India, Asia and Malaysia. As with many tropicals, the ficus cannot endure cold spells, including winter drafts or snow fall on the soil. The ideal temperature for ficus to thrive is around 68 degrees F. Many varieties of ficus can survive quite well with minimal light, even though the plant performs best under full sun conditions. With good lighting, the ficus will also grow at a steady rate, thus purchasing a younger plant for a sunny window is wise. Keep the ficus pruned to control shape and size. Cut above a leaf bud on several stems to thin out the foliage and promote lush, full-bodied growth. Water your ficus heavily with warm, tap water. According to the University of Minnesota Extension Service, it is not recommended to use softened water on a ficus.

The banana plant is found in many tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world. Plants prized for their fiber, stem and leaf use are mostly found in parts of Asia and the surrounding countries. The edible varieties of banana that Americans know are exported from Latin America, Africa and Asia, with 65% of the world's 28 million tons coming from Latin America alone. The plant is grown in high humidity, with a pseudostem system storing ample amounts of water and nutrients in the intense heat of the tropics. According to Purdue University, the proper banana-growing climate consists of 4 inches of rain per month and an average of 80 degree F weather. Banana plants admire most any soil, except for fine sand, which tends to hold great amounts of water.
