    • 1). Press the "Stop" button to turn your Prius off; remove your Smart Key from the ignition slot.

    • 2). Open the rear lift gate to access the tail lamps. On each side of the cargo compartment, you'll find a plastic access door. Push up the latch on the bottom to remove this door.

    • 3). Determine which lamp you want to replace on your 2005 Toyota Prius. There are three bulbs within the tail lamp housing: the rear turn signal, the backup light and the stop light. The rear turn signal is the top bulb in the unit; the backup light is the center bulb; the stop light is the bottom bulb.

    • 4). Carefully turn the bulb you want to replace counterclockwise one-quarter turn. Pull the bulb socket straight back to remove it. Squeeze the tab on the bulb socket and pull the bulb straight off. Wear gloves when handling the new bulb; your skin's oil can damage it.

    • 5). Push the new bulb into the socket until it clicks. Insert the socket back into place. Turn it clockwise to lock it. Position the access panel back in place; push it in firmly to re-attach it.
