Hawaii is known as a "tropical paradise," and this is in part due to the huge amount of gorgeous tropical flowers and plants, many of which are native to the Hawaiian islands. In fact, in addition to having a state flower, each island also has its own flower, most of which are native tropical plants. - This native hibiscus (Hibiscus brackenridgei) is but one of many hibiscus plants found on the islands of Hawaii. Native to the islands, it is the state flower and is known as "pua aloalo" in Hawaiian. There are three subspecies of the plant, all of which vary slightly in the size and shape of the flower. Yellow hibiscus plants can grow in shrub form or can be cultivated as a small tree. They grow best in dry, fertile soil and in hot sun.
- The yellow ilima (Sida fallax) features flowers that, unlike the name implies, can range in color from a very light yellow to deep red. The flowers, which are similar in shape and size to hibiscus blooms, are often used in leis, although they are not fragrant. Yellow ilima is most often cultivated as a shrub. Like the hibiscus, this tropical plant thrives in hot, dry conditions and will bloom year-round if given proper care. The yellow ilima is the flower of the island of Oahu.
- This flower is the official plant of the island of Maui, but unlike the other island flowers, it is not native to Hawaii. The Damask rose (Rosa damascena) was brought to Hawaii from England, where it is a heritage rose, in the 1800s. This fragrant pink (some cultivars are red or white) rose grows as a shrub and is highly valued for its essential oils, which are used in cosmetics and perfumes.
- Anthuriums (Anthurium spp.) are often cultivated as showy tropical indoor plants. They are also highly valued by florists, as they are terrific cut flowers. These tropical plants, which are found all over the islands though they are not native to Hawaii, are best known for their huge, shiny, colorful bracts that surround a long, slender spathe. The bracts range from a deep red to white to a shockingly bright pink.
