How to Make a Wood Saw Top
- 1). Turn off the power to the table saw, and unplug it. Lower the blade below the surface of the table saw top. Insert a screwdriver into the slot of the top plate where the blade emerges. Pry up on it and remove it.
- 2). Lay the plate flat on a piece of hardwood. Use a pencil to trace around the plate.
- 3). Cut the the wooden top plate out on a bandsaw following the pencil line. Sand the perimeter of the wooden top plate with 100-grit sandpaper attached to a hand block.
- 4). Drop the wooden top plate into the recessed area where the metal one came out. Slide the fence over the plate. Position the fence on the left side of where the blade will emerge through the plate when you raise the blade. The fence should be covering 1 inch of the plate on the left side.
- 5). Plug in and turn on the saw. Turn the crank to raise the blade slowly. The fence will hold the wooden top plate down as the blade cuts up through it from the bottom. Continue raising the blade until the blade emerges up through the metal top plate to a height of 2 inches. It's okay to approximate the measurement.
