How to Change the Oil in a 2006 Mustang V6
- 1). Drive the car onto a set of front-end ramps and set the parking brake.
- 2). Depress the hood latch release located under the driver's side dashboard. Prop the hood up and remove the oil filler cap located on the right-hand side of the engine.
- 3). Place a five-quart container suitable for catching oil directly under the drain plug located on the back of the oil pan. Remove the oil drain plug with a 5/16-inch wrench and allow the oil to drain into the pan. Once all of the oil has drained from the oil pan, replace the oil drain plug.
- 4). Locate the oil filter and place the five-quart container under it. The filter is on the passenger side of the Mustang, and it is accessible from under the car. It will be directly above the stabilizer bar and should be easy to see. It may require an oil filter wrench to remove. Allow all of the oil to drain out.
- 5). Place a small amount of oil around the rubber seal on the new oil filter and install it onto the 4.0-liter engine. It should be as tight as you can get it with your hand. If you feel you cannot get the filter tight enough, use an oil filer wrench and give the filter an additional 1/4 turn.
- 6). Place an oil filler funnel into the oil filler tube then pour four quarts of oil into the filler tube. Allow each quart of oil to completely drain before moving onto the next quart. Once all of the oil has drained into the engine, replace the oil filler cap.
- 7). Remove the Mustang from the ramps and place the car on level ground. Turn the Mustang off and check the oil level via the oil dipstick located on the right-hand side of the engine. If the dipstick indicates that the oil level is slightly low, then an additional amount of oil can be added to bring up the volume of oil. Depending on the overall size of the oil filter, the Mustang may need slightly more than four quarts of oil.
