How to Discount by Percentage
- 1). Apply a percentage discount to a number value by multiplying the decimal version of the percentage to the number. Find the total after discount by subtracting that answer from the original value.
- 2). Practice by interpreting and solving a word problem: Michael wants to buy a shirt that is originally $50 but marked on sale as 20 percent off. How much will Michael save on the shirt? How much will he need to pay?
Begin by converting 20 percent to a decimal: 20 / 100 = 0.20. Multiply the decimal to the dollar value: 0.20 * 50 = 10. Write that Michael would save $10 if he bought the shirt on sale. - 3). Find the price Michael will have to pay by subtracting the discounted dollar amount from the original price: 50 - 10 = 40. He would pay $40.
