    • 1). Turn on your computer and download iTunes from Apple's downloads page if you don't already have it. Macs come with iTunes built in, but PC users need to download it manually. For best results with a new iPod, download the most recent iTunes update and install it.

    • 2). Plug in the USB cable that came with your iPod to the bottom of the iPod and a USB port on your computer. Use a USB port directly on your computer, rather than a hub, for best results. Wait a moment for the computer to recognize the iPod. iTunes will automatically open by default.

    • 3). Click on your iPod's icon in the iTunes left side bar if a popup doesn't automatically appear. To set up a new iPod, you have two options for putting music on the iPod. One is to automatically sync with your computer, which will always put all the music from your iTunes library on the iPod every time it's plugged in. This is the best option if you frequently buy new music from the iTunes store and only use one computer. If you have multiple computers you'll plug the iPod into, select "Manage music manually."

    • 4). Put music on your iPod manually if you've selected to manage music manually. Go to your iTunes library, or a music folder on your computer, and drag and drop the folders you want into your iPod icon either in iTunes or on the desktop. It may take between several minutes and an hour if you're transferring a lot of files.
