Despite originally forming back in 1982, Hell didn't release their debut album Human Remains until 2011. Back now with their sophomore record Curse and Chapter, the band offers their dark hymns through grandiose vocals and blazing guitars. Picking up where they left off, the material blends NWOBHM with thrash overtones.

The driving force of the band reuniting in 2008 was ex-Sabbat guitarist and producer extraordinaire Andy Sneap.

Sneap was originally taught guitar by Hell’s vocalist/guitarist Dave Halliday, who committed suicide back in 1987. Brought in to produce their return record, he was so enamored with the project he has now become a full-fledged member.

Vocalist David Bower possesses a unique voice. He utilizes a lot of vibrato and falsetto. It is a theatrical style that fits the music and theme of the band well, but can be irritating at times. In fact, he sounds the best on the chorus of “Darkhangel,” where the melody is addictive and he isn’t using any vibrato. It is the best moment on the record and it would be great to see him utilize this style more often.

First single “The Age of Nefarious” is a blistering track that is reminiscent of early Metal Church. The pre-chorus is ridiculously catchy and the riff is thick and groovy with a ton of downpicking. The chorus contains a similar style to 5th Dimension’s “Age of Aquarius” which I hear every time the track is played.

“End ov Days” begins with a Middle Eastern feel that explodes into a Slayer inspired riff that features some great double bass drumming from Tim Bowler.

The chorus is another memorable affair that includes a killer melodic guitar line to accompany the fist pumping anthem feel. This will no doubt be a live favorite.

Musically is where the band shines the most. Combining fast picked riffing with a classic Iron Maiden style; each song features plenty of headbanging moments. The guitar leads are also the perfect blend of virtuosity and shredding.

Half of the material draws from demos made in the early '80s, and the rest is new material. The record sounds like a band that is comfortable playing with each other after touring their debut. The newer material features some of the strongest moments on the release.

Overall, Curse and Chapter is a solid release. It would serve the band better if Bower would cut back on his over the top vocals, as they serve as a distraction at times. The music is clearly strong enough to stand out and a more straightforward melody would enhance the songwriting.
