How to Get Pumped for a Football Game
- 1). Find a bunch of friends to watch or go to the game with you. The first step to getting pumped is having people around you; the excitement becomes infectious and you end up feeding off of each other's energy. If you watch the game alone, you'll have a much harder time reaching the same levels.
- 2). Know the specifics of the game in question. Beyond the teams playing and the players on each side, learn the offensive and defensive schemes involved, the teams' placement in the standings and anything which might be riding on the game. Even with comparatively unimportant games, the specifics help you understand the stakes involved and thus increase your excitement levels.
- 3). Dress the part. Wear jerseys of your favorite team, break out the flags and pom-poms or at least put on a shirt matching your favorite team's logo or colors.
- 4). Watch footage of your team in previous big games. You can buy DVDs of their greatest hits, check out their website for video streams, or just take a look at YouTube.com to see if anyone's posted footage. A great come-from-behind victory or a game where your team smashes a hated rival can't be beat for getting the adrenaline flowing.
- 5). Prepare a lot of food and good things to drink. A football game without a spread feels a little lifeless and dull. But add a plate of chicken wings and a cooler full of soda, and suddenly the excitement levels go up by a considerable amount. If you're going to the game, plan to tailgate: bring a portable barbecue, arrive a few hours early and grill up your food before heading into the stadium.
- 6). Listen to music before the game. Anything upbeat or high energy will do, though it should definitely have an aggressive or slightly violent edge to it. If possible, tailor the music to match your team. College fight songs work wonders in this regard, while pro teams often have specific songs associated with them as well. (The Cincinnati Bengals, for instance, play "Welcome to the Jungle" before all of their home games.)
