How to Remove Spray Paint
- 1). Ventilate the workspace if the painted surface is indoors. Open a window nearby or use an electric fan to help with circulation.
- 2). Fill a bucket with water and soak a cleaning brush. Spray paint can usually be scrubbed off if it has been freshly applied or still has a glossy finish, indicating that it has not cured. This should be the first method of removal before resorting to chemicals.
- 3). Dampen a dry rag with a small amount of acetone; it is most commonly found in household nail polish removers. Test it on an inconspicuous area on the affected surface to make sure the chemical can be safely applied.
- 4). Wipe the spray paint with the acetone until the it begins to thin. Rinse the excess paint with a wet sponge or cleaning cloth.
- 5). Apply lacquer thinner as a last resort for stripping the paint. The highly effective solvent is strong and should be used sparingly only on bare walls that do not have a finish beneath the spray paint.
- 6). Employ the solvent in the same fashion as the acetone, but use protective rubber gloves to prevent alkaline burns. Rinse the paint and chemicals from the wall and allow it to air dry.
