How to Replace Emergency Brakes in a Saturn Ion
- 1). Determine which type of emergency brakes your Saturn Ion will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for most models of the Saturn Ion use the drum brakes on the rear wheels.
- 2). Remove the wheel assembly and the brake drum with a socket wrench. Disconnect the adjuster spring.
- 3). Spread the top of the brake shoes apart with tool J 38400 so you can remove the adjuster assembly and lever from the rear brake shoe. Use tool J 38400 to extract the universal spring from the web hole of the brake shoe.
- 4). Detach the brake shoe with a socket wrench as you hold the universal spring. Disconnect the parking brake lever from the brake shoe by removing the retaining clip.
- 5). Install the new brake shoes by reversing the removal procedure. Lubricate the adjuster assembly, brake shoe contact pads, brake lever pin and other brake shoe contact surfaces with brake lubricant. Adjust the drum-to-brake-shoe to 0.025 in.
- 6). Road test the vehicle to ensure proper parking brake operation.
