How to Fix a Car Muffler

    • 1). Remove the bolts connecting the muffler to the exhaust piping, using a socket wrench. Since the bolts may be rusted or corroded, you may need to use an air impact socket wrench to remove them. Make sure you are turning the bolts counterclockwise to remove them.

    • 2). Slide the old muffler off the rubber hangers on the body.

    • 3). Slide the new muffler onto the rubber hangers attached to the body of the vehicle.

    • 4). Place a gasket over the end of the muffler where the muffler connects to the exhaust piping.

    • 5). Bolt the muffler to the exhaust piping. Make sure that the gasket is aligned properly and that the gasket forms a positive seal between the muffler and the exhaust piping.

    • 6). Verify that there are no leaks at the muffler-exhaust piping joint by turning on the vehicle and checking to see if any exhaust gases are escaping.
