    Accessing the Root File System Using SSH

    • 1). Download the program "PuTTy" to your computer and open it. A download link is located in the "Resources" section of this article.

    • 2). Locate your iPhone's IP address by tapping with your finger on the "Settings" icon on your iPhone screen.

    • 3). Tap on the button labeled "Wi-Fi" on your iPhone screen.

    • 4). Locate the Wi-Fi network that you are currently connected to, and tap the blue arrow button that is next to your Wi-Fi network's name.

    • 5). Locate "IP Address" found about halfway down the iPhone screen. On your computer, type the iPhone's IP address into the PuTTy "Host Name (or IP address)" field.

    • 6). Click the "SSH" button directly under and slightly to the right of the "Host Name" field.

    • 7). Click the "Open" button located in the bottom right corner of the PuTTy program.

    Logging Into the Root File System and Changing Your Root Password

    • 1). On your computer, type "root" next to the words "login as" in the black box that has popped up and press enter.

    • 2). Enter "alpine" as your default root password and press enter.

    • 3). Type "passwd" and press enter.

    • 4). Enter your new password where is says "New password" in the PuTTy terminal and press enter.

    • 5). Enter your new password again next to the "Retype new password" command in the PuTTy terminal and press enter.
