How to Adjust Adjustable Push Rods

    • 1). Cycle the engine slowly with your hand to get the push rods in the correct position. Stop when the exhaust lifter is traveling downward and the intake lifter is traveling upward.

    • 2). Tighten the push rods with your hands until they are slightly snug and no up or down play is present. The front cylinder on the motor cycle engine should be in its compression stroke, so the front rods will be loose. Finish the adjustment by tightening the push rod with the lock nut with a proper size wrench.

    • 3). Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes in between each push rod to allow the lifter to bleed itself of air. On the last push rod, give yourself another 15 to 20 minutes before starting the engine. To check if the lifters have bled properly, try moving the push rod with your finger.
