How to Measure an Engine Block
- 1). Measure its height. Measure the length from the top of the piston to the part just a few centimeters above the piston ring. Remember the measurement by writing it down. Next, measure the piston's width. Divide the width by two and add the resulting figure to the first measurement to get the engine's height.
- 2). Get the diameter of the bore. Bore diameter is actually just the diameter of the cylinder bores. These bores need to be measured a good half-inch from the engines block's surface. Use the inside-measuring snap gauge to perform this task.
- 3). Get the outside dimensions. To complete the dimensions of you car's engine block, you need to measure the block's outside dimensions. Use a precision tape measure. Measure the length from the transmission bell-housing to the mount of the water pump. Take the width measurement from the edges of the block-to-head surfaces on both sides. Measure the height from the oil pan mounting flange to the tip of the top of the cylinder head.
