How to Repair a Sticky Lifter on a 1994 Jeep Wrangler

    • 1). Remove the vacuum and crankcase ventilation hoses from the top of the valve cover. Squeeze the hose clamps with pliers and pull the hoses from the valve cover.

    • 2). Unscrew the valve cover bolts with a socket wrench, then lift the valve cover and gasket up and remove it from the engine compartment.

    • 3). Unscrew the rocker arm at the corresponding lifter. Remove the rocker arm and push rod to gain access to the lifter needed to repair.

    • 4). Place an extending magnet wants onto the lifter to lift it from the cylinder head.

    • 5). Submerge the lifter in cleaning solvent. Inspect it for excessive wear or damage. If excessive wear or damage is present, replace the lifter with a new lifter.

    • 6). Insert the cleaned or replacement lifter onto the cylinder head.

    • 7). Lubricate the push rod with clean engine oil and place the push rod into the cylinder head.

    • 8). Install the rocker arm over the push rod with a torque wrench, tightening it to 19 foot-pounds.

    • 9). Place the valve cover and new gasket into position, then install the valve cover bolts with a torque wrench, tightening each bolt to 44 inch-pounds.

      Install the vacuum and crankcase ventilation hoses to the top of the valve cover. Squeeze the hose clamps with pliers and push the hoses to the connections on the valve cover.
