Many believe that carbohydrates are a bad thing because they are what cause weight gain, so they try to totally avoid it.
But this is a very bad theory; on the contrary carbohydrates are a very important part of a healthy diet.
Carbohydrates are the most eaten food in the world and are an essential nutrient too.
Not only that, simple carbohydrates such as glucose is an important fuel to the body.
Regular consumption of carbohydrates does not cause weight gain, unless they are eaten in excess.
Eating anything in large or excess quantities is not good for our body, and can have adverse effects.
Eating in excess and not burning that off can then be the direct cause of weight gain.
Carbohydrates diet is a very rich source of energy to our body, providing very few calories compared to fats or alcohols.
Many a times it's what we add to food with carbohydrates that adds up the calories.
There are many ways in choosing good carbohydrates for proper carbohydrates diets out of which, one of the most modern method is to use Glycemic index, where carbohydrates are classified based on how fast they effect the glucose level in the blood.
Slow metabolizing carbohydrates, that release glucose slowly to the blood stream have a low glycemic index and are considered good carbohydrates, whereas High GI carbohydrates, the opposite is responsible for many aliments such as hypertension and diabetes.
There are many examples of Good Carbohydrates diet, so lets review a few.
o Fruits and Vegetables- are a good addition to our diet and a good source of essential simple carbohydrate.
People who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables have very low risk of heart conditions.
o Whole grain- the choice of unrefined grain over the refined variant is a wise choice.
They keep you feeling full longer and have less calories with the same energy value compared to the refined kind.
Examples are brown rice, oats, and whole-grain bread.
o Potatoes- are a very high GI valued carbohydrate.
Remember that carbohydrate diets although over a lot of controversy is a good source of energy and a very important part of our daily diet constituting of about 40 to 60 percent of the food source.
The best thing to do is to avoid all unhealthy carbohydrates, which are the refined sugar carbohydrates; foods that are of sugary snacks, like chocolates, cookies, carbonated soft drinks etc.
The worst of this kind is the common table sugar.
Hence avoiding as much of these carbohydrates can be advisable and prospective health-wise.
