    • 1). Plunge a spade into the soil during winter dormancy to divide unwanted root growth from the desired growth.

    • 2). Pull out the unwanted roots from the ground and dispose in a compost pile or municipal green waste bin.

    • 3). During the spring, cut off tattered or brown leaves at the base of the stem with pruning shears. Wear leather gloves to protect your hands.

    • 4). Cut off wilted flowers at the base throughout the year to encourage fresh blooms.
