Nutrition - What to Eat Once You Start Dancing

You know you have fun when you are dancing.
You know it is supposed to be good exercise.
You know that sometimes your feet hurt when you are done.
Great! But what really happens to your body when you dance, and how does what you eat influence the way your body feels on the dance floor? Dancing is an aerobic exercise.
If you take one or two dance classes a week, chances are you feel more energized afterward.
Exercise causes your body to produce endorphins, and makes your blood flow faster, therefore delivering more oxygen to your various body parts and organs, which results simply enough in you feeling healthier and more energetic.
If however, you are so into dancing these days, that you go out to dance socials and dance for hours on end, the story is a little different.
If this scenario describes you better than the first one, your body probably starts to burn its nutrient and fat supplies after an hour, or so.
Burn fat? Great! Remember though, that together with fat, you also lose water and things like minerals and vitamins.
So make sure you drink water, and eat a healthy snack - think anything that is fresh, and does not come from a plastic bag, or a cardboard box (apples, blueberries, a salad, but not a fresh steaming pizza!).
If your nutritional supplies seem in order, but your joints are the issue, eat something fatty after you dance.
I am serious! And that still does not mean you should down a bag of potato chips, or a McDonald's cheeseburger.
But a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a smoothie is exactly what your body could use.
Healthy fats contained in nuts, milk, fish, and all the things doctors say are good for you, serve to lubricate your joints, making those cool new dance steps easier on your hips and knees.
And if the discomfort gets to be more than you bargained for, see your doctor, and try Glucosamine Sulfate, available over the counter as a dietary supplement, and designed to lubricate your joints somewhat more intensely than just eating fatty fish.
And one last important thing - exercise makes you tired, which means you need to make sure you give yourself proper rest.
This applies to dancing, working out, or any kind of exercise that you do.
Make sure you get enough sleep, don't starve yourself, and drink enough.
Losing weight, and getting the most out of your day is wonderful, but you need to think about the future.
Will you be rested for work tomorrow, or will you not be able to concentrate in that meeting tomorrow because your feet are killing you? Will you be able to go out tomorrow night and dance like nobody is watching, but only if you turn off the TV and go to sleep NOW? Be kind to your body, and it will return the favor! Happy Dancing!
