How to Tell if a "Yu-Gi-Oh!" Card Is a First Edition

    The Packaging Method

    • 1). Find a "Yu-Gi-Oh!" booster pack, booster box (set of packs) or deck. All official "Yu-Gi-Oh!" packaging has the edition printed on the package somewhere.

    • 2). For decks, look at the front of the box in the the top right hand of the tab coming off the box. Under the name of the language (for English it says "ENGLISH EDITION") it will name the edition of the cards. If this says anything other than "1st Edition," it is not a first edition deck.

    • 3). For closed booster boxes, look under the language information on the top right corner of the front of the box for the edition. For open boxes in display mode, look under the language information in the top right corner of the display flap. First edition cards will say "1st Edition."

    • 4). For booster packs, look under the language information on the top right corner on the front of the pack's wrapper. Again, it should say "1st Edition."

    On the Card Itself

    • 1). Place the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" card or cards in question laid out in front of you.

    • 2). Look under the main image on the card between the image and the card's description.

    • 3). Look in left side of this space. First edition cards will say "1st Edition" here.

    • 4). Look at the hologram in the bottom right corner of the card. If the "Eye of Anubis" hologram is gold (instead of silver), it is a first edition card.

    • 5). Get a card that is not first edition and compare the background color of it to the card or cards in question. First edition cards are usually printed darker, so if there is not a difference between the colors, it may be a fake first edition card.
