• An invention convention is a meeting of the minds for fledgling inventors. It's an opportunity to exhibit your invention to the public and trade ideas with other inventors. Schools often have them as a complement to science fairs. Adults, too, participate in invention conventions. No matter the age group, you want the convention to be a fun time. Most conventions have judges awarding medals to the top inventions. A few great ideas, though, could keep people talking about the event for weeks and looking forward to future gatherings.
  
  

Make 'N Take Table

• Feature a table with a variety of materials and supplies, including arts and crafts, clothes, pieces of wood, sports equipment and other assorted objects. Invite spectators to try to make their own invention out of the materials. It will keep kids busy, as well as husbands, wives and friends of participants. You could ask for donations and collect materials all year for it. Who knows, maybe someone will even come up with the next big thing.
  
  

Skit

• Take a break while the judges are deciding the winners with a skit, which could be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. This works well for elementary and middle school kids. Get teachers and parents to dress up as famous inventors and give a brief presentation on their inventions. For example, have someone dress up as Ben Franklin and explain how he invented the lightning rod and bifocals. Keep the skits light and fun.
  
  

Interview Participants

• Have a teacher or student walk around pretending to be a news reporter, while interviewing the participants. Students can explain creations and field a couple quick questions. Film it yourself or get a partner. This is a good way to involve students who aren't participating in the convention. Plus, it makes the young inventors feel like stars. Make a DVD of the interviews and inventions, and sell it as a school fundraiser.
