How to Clean a Gas Grill Grate With Lava Rocks

    • 1). Cool the gas grill for an hour or more with the lid open. Lift out the grate. Turn over all the lava rocks so the grease-covered side faces the flames.

    • 2). Cover the lava rocks with two layers of heavy aluminum foil. Replace the grill grate. Close the lid.

    • 3). Heat the grill with all the burners on high for 30 minutes. Turn off the grill. Lift the lid.

    • 4). Spray the grill grate with water. Scrape and brush away the built-up grease from the grates. Lift out the clean grate and set it aside.

    • 5). Remove the aluminum foil cover from the lava rocks. Turn the lava rocks back over. Repeat the 30 minute heating process to clean the other side, if necessary.

    • 6). When they have cooled completely, soak the outer surfaces of the lava rocks with water from a spray bottle. Blast them with the spray to wash away all the ash from the flame cleaning. Wait 24 hours for the lava rocks to dry before replacing them and the grate for use.
