UPDATED 4/23/2014 - Find Board Certified Dentists in Cabo, Tijuana and Puerto Vallarta for crowns, cosmetic dentistry and dental implants in Mexico

Here's a little known fact: In Mexico a highly-trained certified dentist costs the same as a general dentist in Mexico.

It's incredible but true - that a board certified dentist in Mexico with 2-6 more years of training and who has passed specialist board exams costs the same as a general dentist in Mexico who has only been trained in dental basics such as cleanings, drillings, fillings and pulling (teeth).

Every year thousands of Americans and Canadians desperate for affordable dentistry walk, drive or fly to Mexico to see a dentist in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Tijuana, or Cancun and many end up with a general dentist untrained and unqualified for the advanced dental procedures they are seeking to have done.

According to the American AND Mexican Dental Associations, this is where many dental horror stories originate.

Most dental tourists are motivated to go offshore for dental work as they need to save on expensive larger treatments such as cosmetic dentistry, root canals, crowns, bridges, oral surgery and dental implants and many set themselves up for unsafe, shoddy dental work by not knowing the difference between a general dentist and a certified dentist in Mexico.

And general dentists in Mexico are only too happy to take the dental tourist's money and attempt advanced dentistry at their expense. And it is not illegal for them to do so. While It IS illegal for an American general dentist to practice specialist dentistry in the US where consumer protection laws are stronger.

According to the Mexican dental association, 80% of all dentists in Mexico are general dentists with only basic dental school training. And If you are in need of just a routine check-up, a cleaning or filling - any general dentist in Mexico will do fine.

If you need a root canal and some crowns, go with a board certified Endodontist who has 2 more years of post- graduate training in the specialty and is fully trained and certified for this advanced procedure.

For dental implants in Mexico the story is the same. Many general dentists will attend a dental implant manufacturers quickie weekend school in implants but are not fully qualified to do surgery.

Other factors need to be addressed such as sinus lifts, bone density and gum issues and more that are covered in the oral surgeons 4 additional years in post-grad studies.

There are no short-cuts to learning medical science properly and since the cost for a certified Mexican dental specialist is the same as a general dentist in Mexico, the decision to go or not go with the most qualified dentist does not need to be based on price.
