How to Plant Flowers in a Big Wooden Pot

    • 1). Check the wooden pot for drainage holes in the bottom. The Ohio State University Extension advises that wooden pots should have at least four drainage holes. If you purchased a pot that does not have holes in the bottom, drill them yourself.

    • 2). Place the wooden pot where you plan on keeping it, indoors or out. Once you fill a large wooden pot with soil and plants, it may be too heavy to easily move.

    • 3). Fill the pot three-quarters of the way full with good-quality, well-aerated potting soil. Avoid using regular garden soil as it may contain weeds, disease or pests and is too heavy for container gardening.

    • 4). Remove the new flowers from their nursery containers. Place them on the soil, before doing any digging, to make sure they will fit in the pot without crowding each other. Remember that they may spread out as they grow.

    • 5). Put the flowers aside and dig your holes, one by one. Place the flower as deep as the top of the root ball and gently shovel in dirt around the root ball with your hand to secure the flower in the wooden pot. Do this with each flower.

    • 6). Water the flowers deeply, until water seeps from the bottom holes of the pot. Add more potting soil around the flowers, if necessary --- the initial watering settles the soil around the flowers and may expose their roots.
