Easy to Build Grow Boxes
- Grow boxes are generic terms for ways to grow plants indoors. There are two common methods. One is a sub-irrigation box, where you basically set the plants in water. The other is to build a cabinet or closet for growing your plants. A sub-irrigation box is usually made of plastic or another container that holds water, and it's lined with containers the plants grow in, so they can drink the water from the bottom. Chemical fertilizer is often used, as well as pumps and other irrigation supplies. A grow closet or cabinet can be built out of anything and is usually lined with a reflective material to maximize the light the plants get---and they sometimes have fans and ducts and other systems to control air flow around the plants.
- To make a grow box that is self-irrigated, set up a platform to hold your seedlings. The pots must have holes in the bottom so the water can enter. Typically, you add water to the box using a tube so the water goes to the bottom of the box without flowing over the base of the plants. A box like this can be used outside, in a window or underneath a grow light.
- Grow cabinets can be any size you can fit in your house or apartment. They can be in an attic or a garage, as long as the temperature can be kept at a level suitable for the plants. They can even be the corner of a room or basement. Line the box with reflective material and set up a system for air flow. This can be a fan built into the corner of the box or a duct that leads from the cabinet to the window. Affix lights to the top and possibly the upper sides of the cabinet to provide lighting for the plants. The lights will also generate heat, which may be enough to keep the plants warm, depending on the location and size of your box. If not, a small heater may be needed, but be careful that it doesn't get too hot.
