    • 1). Get out your driver's license number, social security number, contact information for your most recent employer, the dates and names of all the employers you had in the past 18 months and your mailing address. These are all the things you need to file an unemployment claim in any state.

    • 2). Use the U.S. Department of Labor website to obtain to the website for your state unemployment office and the state where you worked. Once there, look for the claims filing phone number, typically listed under the directions for how to file a claim or on the "Contact Us" page.

    • 3). Call the claims center for the state that you live in first. In some states you must file in the state where you live, while others require that you file in the state where you worked. Starting with the state where you live allows you to learn what your options are because if you can do either, your claims representative can let you know which state offers the most compensation.

    • 4). Give your unemployment details to the claims representative in the state where you decide to file. You may have no choice if your state has strict requirements. Once you finish giving your details to the claims representative and you get your confirmation number, you have completed your unemployment application.
