How to Change the Oil on a 1999 Ford F-150 V-8 Pickup Truck
- 1). Start the truck and let it warm up for a few minutes. Warm oil flows easier and will carry more sludge out when you drain it. Turn off the engine once it is warm.
- 2). Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. The oil filler cap is located slightly to the driver's side of center, behind the air duct. It is marked "Oil." Removing the cap will allow air to enter the system, making the oil drain faster from the drain hole.
- 3). Place the drain pan underneath the oil pan drain plug. If you want to keep the work area clean, spread some newspapers around the area. The oil pan is attached to the bottom of the engine approximately even with the front wheels. Loosen the drain plug with a socket by turning the plug counterclockwise. Continue to remove the plug by hand. When the plug is free from the threads, quickly remove the plug and allow the oil to drain completely.
- 4). Clean the drain plug with a rag to remove any particles of metal sticking to it. Reinsert it in the oil pan. Tighten it to where it is snug, but do not use excessive force, which will strip the threads.
- 5). Locate the engine oil filter. It is on the bottom of the driver's side of the engine, towards the front. Place the oil filter wrench on the filter and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Continue to remove it by hand. When the filter is free from the threads, remove it and dump out the remaining oil in the drain pan.
- 6). Lubricate the gasket on the new filter with some new oil. This will help prevent the gasket from sticking to the engine when it's time to remove the filter. Screw the filter onto the threads by hand, then use the oil filter wrench to tighten it just slightly more.
- 7). Place the funnel in the oil filler neck. Add 5.5 quarts of oil. Remove the oil dipstick, wipe it off and replace it. The dipstick is located a little to the right of the oil filler neck. Remove the dipstick again and check to make sure that the oil reaches the "Full" mark. Add more oil as needed. Replace the dipstick and the filler cap.
- 8). Start the truck and let it run for a few minutes. Watch to ensure that the oil pressure light doesn't come on. If it does, immediately shut off the vehicle and check for problems. Turn off the truck.
- 9). Recheck the oil level. If necessary, add more oil to bring it back to the "Full" mark. After running the engine, the level usually drops due to oil filling the new filter.
