Training to Become a Certified Addiction Counselor
- Each state has its own requirements for becoming a certified addiction counselor, but the minimum degree you will need is a bachelor's degree. Typically, you will major in either sociology or psychology before going on to complete either a master's degree program or a specialized program related to addiction counseling. Check the requirements for licensure in your state to find out if you will need a bachelor's or a master's degree.
- Most states require a master's degree as the minimum amount of education to become a certified addiction counselor. Sociology and psychology are the two most common degrees obtained by those looking to become an addiction counselor. Some schools, however, offer master's programs in addiction counseling. If your school offers this program, take advantage of it as it will provide you with all of the essential knowledge of addiction you will need to become a successful counselor.
- Upon graduating with either a bachelor's or master's degree, you will need to complete an accredited program specializing in addiction counseling. If your master's program offered an emphasis in addiction counseling, you will not need to complete any more coursework in the field.
- Before you can become a state licensed addiction counselor you will need to complete a series of supervised clinical rotations working with a licensed addiction counselor. Typically, you will shadow an addiction counselor over a period of time and learn essential skills from him during your rotations. This is the best way to gain valuable first-hand experience in what it is like to be an addiction counselor. Every state has a different number of hours required for licensure.
- As an addiction counselor you may choose to work with people with all forms of addiction, or you may choose to pick an addiction to specialize in. If you choose a specialized addiction, such as gambling, you can continue your education by taking specialized courses through an accredited institution to further your knowledge and expertise in that particular addiction.
