Kinds of Maggots
- Some maggots are large whites called bluebottle fly larvae, while others are pinkies known as greenbottle fly larvae. Squatts or feeders are the house fly larvae. Cabbage or root maggots are from grey fly larvae. Apple maggots are a smaller version of the house fly maggot.
- The large whites are the biggest maggots. The pinkies are half the size of the large whites, but they are much more active. The squatts and feeders are tiny maggots that like to be in sand. Apple maggots are small, brown and live in soil, as do the cabbage or root maggots; the cabbage maggots are white in color.
- Large whites, squatts or feeders and pinkies are all one color with no bands or lines. The apple and cabbage or root maggot have darker bands that run around their body.
- The apple maggots will dig into apples, creating brown spots and holes throughout the fruit. The cabbage maggots eat the cabbage seedlings from the inside out, wilting the leaves and turning the plant yellow.
- The apple and cabbage or root maggots kill crops. Cabbage maggots are also known to nest in onions and broccoli as well. The large whites, pinkies and squatts or feeders are commonly used for bait fishing, especially for coarse anglers.
