How to Clean Rust Corrosion on Brushed Chrome Plumbing Fixtures

    • 1). Clean the fixture with a chrome cleaner like Flitz. Spray the cleaner onto the surface, and wipe it down with a clean micro-fiber towel to give you a clear picture of where the rust is located.

    • 2). Polish the rust on the chrome with a chrome polish. Apply a small amount to a rag, and buff it into the rusted areas on the chrome.

    • 3). Remove heavier areas of rust by using very fine steel wool and the chrome polish. Place a small amount of the polish onto the steel wool and work it into the rusted areas, gently buffing out the rust. If the brush marks are going in a noticeable direction, rub the steel wool in the direction of the brush marks. Try an inconspicuous area of the fixture first to ensure that the steel wool is not going to damage the finish. Rinse the fixture with water.

    • 4). Polish out any remaining rust with white vinegar and aluminum foil. Fold the foil into a palm-sized square. Soak it in the white vinegar, place the foil in the palm of your hand and gently rub the rusted areas of the fixture.

    • 5). Rinse the fixture with water after you have cleaned it with the aluminum foil and white vinegar. Clean the fixture again with the chrome cleaner and a micro-fiber towel, thoroughly drying it.
